The annual I Like Pie fun run took place on November 28, 2025, drawing approximately 5,000 participants despite chilly conditions and early morning sleet. Organized by Cascade Lakes Relay, the event transformed into a festive atmosphere as runners and walkers gathered at Riverbend Park, eager to enjoy slices of pie on Thanksgiving morning.
Participants navigated the course through the Old Mill district, donning bright I Like Pie hats that provided a cheerful contrast to the dreary weather. Scott Douglass, CEO of Cascade Lakes Relay, noted the resilience of Central Oregonians, stating, “They’re focused on getting their run in and their pie.” Douglass emphasized the event’s success, highlighting it as the largest turnout in its history.
This year’s fun run featured over 400 pies, brought in from local suppliers including Costco. The selection ranged from traditional apple and pumpkin to unique offerings like pumpkin cheesecake. The event also catered to diverse dietary needs, with vegan and gluten-free options available.
Community Spirit and Fundraising Efforts
The event raised over $50,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bend, with new CEO Michael Baker expressing his gratitude for the community’s support. Baker, who has been in his role for just three weeks, remarked on the welcoming nature of Bend’s residents. “I had so many people come up to me today to say welcome to Bend, we’re happy to have you,” he said. He emphasized the importance of providing resources for youth, ensuring that all children can access the club regardless of their economic situation. Last year, the organization awarded over $40,000 in youth scholarships.
Organizers also reinstated the Perfect Slice challenge, inviting local home bakers to submit their pies for judging. More than 20 submissions were evaluated by local officials, including Mayor Melanie Kebler, with the strawberry rhubarb pie earning top honors.
New Faces and Community Connections
Among the crowd were newcomers to Bend, including Jenny and Nick Foster, who relocated from Iowa. They discovered the event through local race announcements and appreciated the opportunity to engage with the community. “It was a really fun way to see what Bend is all about,” Jenny commented, as they enjoyed pumpkin cheesecake pie after the run.
The Fosters planned to attend a Friendsgiving gathering later that day, bringing traditional Midwestern dishes like macaroni and cheese, which Jenny humorously noted requires “extra cheese.”
The I Like Pie fun run not only celebrates the Thanksgiving spirit but also reinforces community ties, with participants enjoying a shared experience while contributing to a meaningful cause. As the event continues to grow, its impact on the local community remains significant, fostering connections and supporting essential services for youth in Bend.
