The Los Angeles Rams have placed cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon on injured reserve following a broken clavicle sustained during their recent victory over the Tennessee Titans. This decision was announced on Monday, just a day after the Rams improved their season record to 2-0 with a 33-19 win on September 17, 2023. Witherspoon is expected to miss a minimum of four games, although recovery from collarbone injuries typically requires between six to twelve weeks, as noted by the Mayo Clinic.

Head coach Sean McVay expressed the team’s disappointment, calling Witherspoon’s injury “a big loss.” The 30-year-old cornerback had started both games this season, recording three tackles and one pass deflection before his injury. He was sidelined in the second quarter against the Titans, with medical staff quickly ruling him out for the remainder of the match.

In his nine seasons in the NFL, Witherspoon has played for the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Rams. Over the course of his career, he has participated in 92 games, making 64 starts. His career statistics include 238 tackles, 12 interceptions—one of which he returned for a touchdown—59 passes defended, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.

With Witherspoon out, the Rams will look to other players to fill the cornerback position. Currently, Emmanuel Forbes, Cobie Durant, and Darious Williams are available as options. Forbes has already started both games this season, while Williams made his season debut on Sunday in relief of Witherspoon.

The Rams will need to adapt quickly as they prepare for their upcoming matches, aiming to maintain their momentum in the 2023 season despite this significant setback. As the team navigates this injury, their defensive strategy will be critical to sustaining their early success.
