As the 2025 NFL season progresses, defenses are taking center stage ahead of the playoffs. With many teams experiencing inconsistent offensive performances, the importance of defensive units is magnified. This week, all 32 NFL defenses are ranked from elite to those that provide an offensive team with an opportunity to improve.
In a league traditionally dominated by offense, defenses have often been overlooked. Nonetheless, the adage “defense wins championships” rings true, especially as teams prepare for the postseason. Each week, defensive units will be categorized into six tiers: Elite, Bet the Under, Competitive, Mediocre, Hanging by a Thread, and Opponent’s Get-Right Game.
Top Defensive Units Shine
Currently, the Denver Broncos hold the top position in the rankings, closely followed by the Houston Texans. The Broncos, in their recent victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, allowed just seven points and a mere 188 net yards. This performance highlights their ability to effectively neutralize an opposing offense. Meanwhile, the Texans also put together a strong showing, limiting the Jacksonville Jaguars to 11 net yards in the fourth quarter of their Week 10 matchup.
The Seattle Seahawks have demonstrated consistent defensive prowess, allowing 20 or fewer points in eight of their nine games. Similarly, the Green Bay Packers, under defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, are improving week by week, having recently held the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles to just 10 points.
Other Notable Performances
The Baltimore Ravens have made a resurgence after a challenging start to the season, allowing fewer than 20 points in their last four games. Their recent health improvements have contributed significantly to this turnaround. In Philadelphia, the defense led by Vic Fangio has gained momentum, particularly following the impactful debut of two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Jaelan Phillips.
The Indianapolis Colts have been recognized as having the ninth-best scoring defense in the league, bolstered by the acquisition of All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. However, the absence of star defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who is on injured reserve due to a neck injury, raises concerns about their future performances.
The Carolina Panthers, after ranking among the worst defensive teams last season, have made notable improvements, now sitting at 12th in scoring defense. They have kept their opponents under 17 points in three of their last four games.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Chicago Bears lead the NFL with 20 takeaways but have struggled when unable to force turnovers. Their recent performance against the New York Giants saw them allow 20 points, following two games where they conceded a total of 72 points. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ defense has faced criticism for a poor showing against the Houston Texans, surrendering a 19-point lead and allowing 26 points in the fourth quarter.
As the season reaches its critical phase, teams are acutely aware that defensive strength will be key to postseason success. The rankings reflect the shifting dynamics of NFL defenses and underscore the importance of strong defensive play in a league often focused on offensive fireworks.
