The New York Jets have made a crucial move in response to a significant injury to rookie running back Braelon Allen, who has been placed on the injured reserve list due to a knee injury. During a recent game against the Miami Dolphins, Allen suffered a sprained MCL, which has sidelined him for at least four weeks.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported via social media that Allen is expected to seek additional medical opinions regarding his injury. The Jets have since signed veteran running back Khalil Herbert to fill the gap left by Allen’s absence. Rapoport confirmed that Allen’s placement on the injured reserve was official and noted, “He’s likely to be out longer than four weeks.”
Allen, who was selected by the Jets in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, has already made an impact in his short career, scoring three rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. At just 21 years old, he briefly held the title of the youngest player in the NFL.
Herbert, now in his fifth NFL season, originally entered the league in 2021 when he was drafted by the Chicago Bears. The Bears picked him with the 217th overall selection from Virginia Tech. After spending three seasons in Chicago, he was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals for the remainder of the 2024 season. Heading into this year, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts but was released during final roster cuts in August. After a brief stint on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad, he has now joined the Jets, who are still seeking their first win of the season.
The Jets have struggled significantly, starting the season with a record of 0-4. Their losses include a narrow defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers (34-32), a loss against the Buffalo Bills, and a close game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They fell to the Dolphins last weekend with a score of 27-21, continuing their winless streak.
Looking ahead, the Jets will host the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday before traveling to face the Denver Broncos the following week. As the team grapples with injuries and seeks to turn their season around, the addition of Herbert may provide a much-needed boost to their running game.
With the 2025 NFL season in full swing, fans can catch the action through various streaming platforms, ensuring they do not miss any critical moments as teams vie for playoff positions.
