In a thrilling semifinal clash, the Mountain View Lady Eagles overcame a nine-point deficit to defeat the Holy Cross Lady Crusaders, 50-44, in the District 2 Class 2A girls basketball tournament. The match took place on February 23, 2024, at the J. William McLaughlin Gymnasium in Kingsley, Pennsylvania.

Holy Cross started strong, showcasing impressive 3-point shooting that allowed them to take a 36-27 lead early in the third quarter. Faced with this challenge, Mountain View coach Corey Gesford called a timeout. His message to the players centered on composure and the importance of focusing on their defensive strategy. “I told them it was deep-breath time, that there was plenty of ball game left,” Gesford stated.

Mountain View responded effectively, tightening their defense and holding Holy Cross to just eight points over the final 14 minutes of play. The second-seeded Lady Eagles (18-6) capitalized on their experience to rally back, setting up a final showdown against the top-seeded Wyoming Seminary on February 27, 2024, at 4 p.m.

Addison Kilmer led the charge for Mountain View, contributing an impressive 25 points, along with 15 rebounds, five steals, and two blocks. Her performance was crucial in turning the tide of the game. Emily Trichilo added 11 points, while Holy Cross saw Aniya Osgood score 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Mollie Urban adding another 12 points.

The first half ended with Holy Cross leading 25-23. Their momentum continued as Osgood, Lila Kolcharno, and Ava Schmidt all connected from beyond the arc to push the lead to 36-27. “It’s something we’ve been working on all year. We have five kids who can knock down shots,” commented Holy Cross coach Lindsay Howard.

Despite their strong start, Holy Cross struggled to maintain their scoring pace. Mountain View’s defense intensified, and they went on a 12-0 run that shifted the game in their favor. Key plays included Trichilo’s timely 3-pointer and Kilmer’s quick steals that led to easy baskets. “We just really dialed in, had to run them off the line and trust our help defense,” Kilmer noted.

As the fourth quarter unfolded, Mountain View took the lead for good when Trichilo hit another crucial 3-pointer, making it 43-42. Kilmer then added to the lead with a 3-pointer of her own, and crucial free throws from Aubrey Sanders sealed the victory.

Howard reflected on the game, acknowledging Mountain View’s experience in high-pressure situations. “They were able to create the plays in the crucial moments to get the win,” she remarked.

The upcoming district final against Wyoming Seminary is a rematch of last year’s semifinal, which Mountain View won in overtime. The Lady Eagles have solidified their place in the PIAA Class 2A playoffs, following a strong postseason performance in recent years. Kilmer expressed the team’s determination, stating, “Our first goal was league champs and now we’re in the hunt for the district championship. It means a lot.”

In other semifinal action, Wyoming Seminary triumphed over Elk Lake, 45-25. Ella Stambaugh led the Blue Knights with 27 points, continuing her formidable performance in the district tournament.

As the stage is set for the finals, anticipation builds for a competitive matchup between Mountain View and Wyoming Seminary. The game promises to be a showcase of skill and resilience as both teams aim for the championship title.
