The Landrum Cardinals girls varsity tennis team clinched the Upper State Championship title on November 4, 2023, by defeating the Clinton team 4-2 on their home courts. This victory secures the Cardinals a place in the SCHSL 1A/2A Girls Tennis State Finals, showcasing their exceptional performance throughout the season.
Completing the regular season with a remarkable record of 19-1, the Cardinals dominated their region, finishing with an undefeated 6-0 record to capture the Class AA, Region 1 title. Their journey to the championship included a series of commanding playoff performances, including a decisive 6-0 win against Saluda High School in the second round, followed by another 6-0 victory over Whitmire High School.
Key Players Shine in Championship Match
Central to the Cardinals’ success in the Upper State Championship was Amelia Campbell, who was named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance against Clinton. Her contributions, alongside the remarkable skills of teammates Ilana Taylor and Eva Burnett, who received Player of the Match honors during the playoffs, highlight the depth and talent of the Landrum program.
This season, the standout players have consistently excelled. In singles matches, sophomore Ilana Taylor holds an impressive record of 10-2, while freshman Ellis Burnett has made a significant impact with a 9-2 record. The doubles team of Eva Burnett and Ilana Taylor has proven effective throughout the season, complemented by the strong performances of Carlyn Fowler and Kendall Wilcox in the second doubles team.

As the Cardinals prepare for the state finals, they will face the Lower State Champion Academic Magnet High School, which enters the match with a record of 17-7. The championship match is scheduled for November 8, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Cayce Tennis Center, located at 1120 Fort Congaree Trail, Cayce, South Carolina.
