The Gridley High School football team’s remarkable season came to an end on March 15, 2024, as they lost to Lincoln 28-20 in the CIF Division 6-AA regional final. The defeat marks the conclusion of a stellar campaign for the Bulldogs, who finished the season with a record of 13-1 after going 10-0 in the regular season and securing the Northern Section Division III championship.
Gridley started the game strong, scoring the first touchdown. However, Lincoln quickly responded with two touchdowns, taking a 14-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs fought back in the second quarter, with Jace Griggs scoring twice on rushing touchdowns, allowing Gridley to gain a 20-14 advantage at halftime.
As the game progressed, Gridley found themselves in a promising position late in the third quarter, reaching the Lincoln 6-yard line. Unfortunately, a crucial stop by the Lions’ defense resulted in a missed field goal attempt, leaving the score at 20-14 in favor of Gridley.
The fourth quarter proved to be pivotal. With six minutes remaining, Ryan Bernwanger of Lincoln intercepted a pass, shifting the momentum. Just two minutes later, Luca Papoulias connected with Michael Whitelaw for a stunning 65-yard touchdown pass, giving Lincoln a narrow 21-20 lead.
Gridley’s misfortunes continued shortly thereafter when a fumble at their own 17-yard line allowed Lincoln to extend their lead to 28-20. Kyan Phillips capped off the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run, sealing the Bulldogs’ fate.
Despite the loss, Gridley’s season was one for the books, showcasing the talents of a diverse roster that included 11 seniors, 16 juniors, 11 sophomores, and one freshman. The Bulldogs demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the season, ultimately concluding with a commendable 13-1 record.
Lincoln, now with an 11-3 record, advances to the CIF Division 6-AA championship game, where they will face Valley Center. As Gridley reflects on their achievements, the team will undoubtedly build on this experience for future seasons.
