Russell Westbrook remains a free agent as he searches for a new team in the NBA. Former teammate Enes Freedom has weighed in on Westbrook’s current situation, emphasizing the challenges he faced during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers. Freedom believes that the expectations surrounding the Lakers and their star player, LeBron James, contributed to Westbrook’s struggles in recent seasons.

Freedom stated, “He can still play in the NBA. It’s crazy he cannot find a team.” He pointed out that the pressure of being part of a franchise like the Lakers can be overwhelming. “It all started with the Lakers. Look at his career—as soon as he went to the Lakers,” Freedom explained. He added, “If the season fails, then you need to have some kind of scapegoat.”

Westbrook joined the Lakers ahead of the 2021-2022 NBA season, playing in 130 regular-season games. Despite his contributions, the team did not advance to the playoffs that year, leading Freedom to suggest that Westbrook became a target for criticism. “I think that year they picked Russell Westbrook as a scapegoat,” he noted.

During his first season with the Lakers, Westbrook started all 78 games and averaged 18.5 points per game, shooting 44 percent from the field. However, his performance dipped in the following season, where he played 52 games but started in only three. Westbrook’s averages fell to 15.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 7.5 assists, with a shooting percentage of 41 percent.

In February 2023, Westbrook was traded to the Utah Jazz before reaching a buyout agreement. He subsequently signed with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he faced further challenges in his quest for a championship. His tenure with the Clippers has yet to yield a playoff success, and last year’s stint with the Denver Nuggets saw him average 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists.

The Lakers, meanwhile, have struggled to return to the NBA Finals since Westbrook’s departure, indicating that his absence has not solved their championship woes. Despite ongoing interest, including reports that the Sacramento Kings are considering Westbrook as a potential addition, he has yet to secure a new contract. Freedom emphasizes that Westbrook’s “scapegoat” status has hindered his opportunities in the league.

As Westbrook continues his search for a new team, the impact of his time with the Lakers remains a significant chapter in his career. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see where he lands next, and if he can reclaim his status as a leading player in the league.
