Former football manager Dick Advocaat has stepped down from his role as head coach of the Curacao national team, just four months before the team’s debut at the World Cup. Citing personal reasons, Advocaat’s resignation means he will not lead the small Caribbean nation into their historic first appearance in the tournament.
Advocaat guided Curacao through a remarkable qualification campaign, which concluded last year. Under his leadership, the team topped their CONCACAF group, finishing ahead of established teams like Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, and Bermuda. This achievement marked a significant milestone for a nation with a population of approximately 150,000, earning Advocaat the opportunity to become the oldest manager in World Cup history at the age of 78.
The decision to resign reportedly stems from concerns over his daughter’s health. In a statement, Advocaat expressed his deep connection to Curacao, stating, “I have always said that family comes before football. This is a self-evident decision. But, of course, that doesn’t change the fact that I’m going to miss Curacao, the people there and my colleagues very much.”
His departure will require the Curacao Football Federation to appoint a new head coach ahead of a friendly match against Scotland at Hampden Park on May 30, 2023. Advocaat reflected on his tenure, saying, “I consider qualifying the smallest nation in the world for the World Cup one of the highlights of my career. I am proud of my players, staff and board members who believed in us.”
Gilbert Martina Responds to Resignation
In response to Advocaat’s resignation, Gilbert Martina, president of the Curacao Football Federation, released a statement acknowledging the significance of Advocaat’s contributions. “His decision commands nothing but respect. Dick has made history with our national team. Curacao will always remain grateful to him,” Martina said.
Advocaat’s successor will be Fred Rutten, a former Dutch international and experienced manager who has previously led clubs such as PSV, Anderlecht, Feyenoord, and Schalke 04. Rutten expressed his admiration for Advocaat, stating, “It is a difficult time for Dick, and I wish him and his family strength. Dick is an icon in world football. It is truly an honour to continue his work.” He assured fans that he would maintain the dedication and commitment established under Advocaat’s leadership.
Curacao’s World Cup Journey
Curacao’s journey to the World Cup has been a source of pride for the nation. They are set to begin their campaign in Group E with a match against Germany in Houston on June 14, 2023. The friendly against Scotland will serve as an important warm-up ahead of the tournament, allowing the team to solidify its preparations for the global stage.
As Advocaat steps away from the sidelines, the football world watches closely to see how Curacao will navigate this transition and build on the historic success achieved during his tenure.
