DETROIT LAKES — The winter season is officially underway at Detroit Mountain, where snowfall has ignited excitement among staff and visitors alike. Following several winters of limited natural snow, the recent blizzard-like conditions have brought a welcome change. “We get excited if there’s a blizzard coming that’s going to dump a lot of snow on us,” said Mandy Sharp, guest services manager at Detroit Mountain. Having worked at the resort since 2017, Sharp knows firsthand the importance of natural snowfall for creating an enjoyable experience.

Over the past few years, the unpredictability of natural snow has become evident. While the mountain has the technology to produce artificial snow using snow guns, Sharp emphasizes that it does not replicate the experience of real snow. “I think people see snow, and then they think snow, and then they’re coming out to play with us. So it’s great. The snow, the snow everywhere, helps us a lot,” she stated, highlighting how snowfall positively impacts visitor turnout.

Increased Attendance and Improved Terrain

The presence of ample natural snow not only boosts attendance but also enhances the mountain’s terrain, making it easier for skiers and snowboarders to navigate the trails. Sharp noted that the combination of natural snow and favorable conditions for snow-making is elevating the overall experience for outdoor enthusiasts. “I feel like we’ve already seen busier crowds on weekends and weeknights. And it seems like the community is ready to ski and snowboard again,” she said, reflecting on the growing enthusiasm for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

In addition to the excitement surrounding the snowfall, visitors can look forward to a new attraction this winter: a lit-up, cross-country Nordic ski trail. According to Jenny Sheets, interim executive director, the trail is set to have its grand opening by the end of December 2023, thanks to a recent grant and the predicted snowfall. This new feature is expected to further enhance the visitor experience at Detroit Mountain.

Opening Plans and Community Engagement

Sharp expressed optimism about the mountain’s operations in the coming days, hoping that, weather permitting, Detroit Mountain can remain open for 16 of the next 18 days. This commitment to accessibility and community engagement is crucial as the resort aims to draw in a diverse crowd of outdoor enthusiasts.
