cu-buffs-fall-to-byu-after-strong-start-in-disappointing-loss

The CU Buffs faced a challenging defeat against the No. 25 BYU Cougars, losing 24-21 on September 9, 2023. Despite an impressive start that saw them take a 14-0 lead early in the game, the Buffs struggled to maintain momentum, ultimately falling short against a formidable opponent.

The game began with high energy as the Buffs quickly established dominance, scoring two touchdowns within the first ten minutes. They accumulated a remarkable 132 yards of offense during this opening stretch. However, the tide turned in the second quarter when BYU’s defense adjusted its strategy. The Buffs managed just 159 yards over the remaining fifty minutes and were outscored 24-7.

A pivotal moment occurred when BYU, holding a slim three-point lead, missed a crucial 55-yard field goal with 8 minutes and 7 seconds left in the game. The Buffs took possession at their own 37-yard line but failed to capitalize, going three-and-out and punting the ball back to BYU. Although the Cougars did not score again, they managed to drain nearly five minutes off the clock with a seven-play possession, which ended in a punt that pinned the Buffs deep in their own territory at the 4-yard line.

Reflecting on the game, CU head coach Deion Sanders expressed disappointment, stating, “We had opportunities, a tremendous amount of opportunities. Nevertheless, we didn’t cash in.” This sentiment encapsulated the Buffs’ struggle to convert strong starts into tangible results.

In terms of standout performances, wide receiver Dre’lon Miller made significant contributions, playing dual roles as a receiver and running back. He recorded eight carries for 52 yards and a touchdown, as well as two receptions for 27 yards and another touchdown. Defensively, safety Tawfiq Byard shone with a team-high 10 tackles, including one tackle for loss, demonstrating his impact on the field.

Special teams player Damon Greaves also had a noteworthy game, despite a rare misstep with his first shanked punt of the season, which only traveled 29 yards. He redeemed himself by placing two of his five punts inside the opponent’s ten-yard line, showcasing his ability to pin back BYU.

With this defeat, the CU Buffs are left to regroup and analyze their performance as they prepare for upcoming challenges. The promising start to the game offers a glimmer of hope, but consistency will be key if they hope to compete effectively in future matchups.
