
The Colfax-Mingo volleyball team achieved a much-needed victory at the Pleasantville tournament on March 15, 2024, breaking a five-match losing streak. The Tigerhawks won their only match of the day against Chariton, securing a hard-fought victory in three sets.
In the match against Chariton, Colfax-Mingo triumphed with set scores of 15-21, 22-20, and 15-12. Katelyn Steenhoek played a key role, contributing four assists, four kills, five digs, and two aces. Hope Allen also made a significant impact, adding five assists, three kills, and three digs. Other notable performances included Grace Hunsberger, who recorded four kills, four digs, and two aces, while Grace Allen pitched in with four digs and two aces. Overall, the Tigerhawks successfully served 44-of-51, achieving nine aces during the match.
Despite their success against Chariton, Colfax-Mingo faced challenges in their other matches, losing to PCM, Southeast Warren, and the host team, Pleasantville. In the match against Pleasantville, the Tigerhawks lost in straight sets, with scores of 21-12 and 21-17. Grace Allen led the team with seven digs and two assists, while Hunsberger contributed five kills and two digs. The team struggled with their serving, finishing 20-of-26, compared to Pleasantville’s impressive 37-of-39 with 13 aces.
In their match against Southeast Warren, the Tigerhawks were defeated 21-14, 21-11. Steenhoek again stood out, registering four assists, three kills, and two aces. The team managed 22-of-26 in serves but could not overcome Southeast Warren, who currently boasts the most wins in Class 1A with a record of 31-5.
Colfax-Mingo’s final match against PCM ended in a 21-18, 21-8 loss. Grace Allen again led in defense with seven digs, while Mickey Bucklin contributed two blocks and four digs. Despite their efforts, the Tigerhawks served effectively with 20-of-21 but fell short against a strong PCM team.
The absence of senior hitter Britney Keeney, who was attending her brother’s wedding, was felt by the Tigerhawks throughout the tournament. As they look to build on their lone victory, the Tigerhawks aim to regroup and improve as their season progresses.
