In a competitive showdown on December 22, 2023, the Colfax-Mingo basketball teams faced off against BGM in Brooklyn, Iowa, resulting in a split for the visiting Tigerhawks. The girls’ team secured a narrow victory, while the boys’ team fell short despite a standout performance.

Girls’ Team Triumphs in Close Match

The Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team edged out BGM with a score of 42-38. This victory not only marked the team’s third consecutive win but also improved their South Iowa Cedar League (SICL) record to 2-3. The Tigerhawks now stand at 4-4 for the season after starting with a challenging 1-4 record.

Isabelle Foglesong led the charge for Colfax-Mingo, scoring 15 points, along with two rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Mickey Bucklin contributed significantly with 10 points and three rebounds. Mallory Sipma achieved a personal best, grabbing 11 rebounds while adding four points to the scoreboard. Lydia Hansen and Dakota Allen also made valuable contributions, scoring six and seven points, respectively.

The match began competitively, with Colfax-Mingo leading 12-10 after the first quarter and extending their advantage to 24-17 at halftime. However, BGM mounted a comeback, taking a two-point lead into the final quarter. Colfax-Mingo responded effectively, outscoring BGM 12-4 in the last frame to secure the win. Despite shooting 35 percent from the field and committing 23 turnovers, the Tigerhawks’ resilience proved crucial.

The loss dropped BGM to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in SICL play.

Boys’ Team Struggles Against BGM Bears

In contrast, the Colfax-Mingo boys basketball team faced a tougher challenge, falling to BGM with a score of 61-49. This defeat left the Tigerhawks with a 1-4 record in conference play and 1-7 overall.

Wyatt Jay delivered an impressive performance, scoring a career-high 21 points and securing seven rebounds. Chase Trotter added eight points and five rebounds, while Izaiah Lewis, Wyatt Thornton, and Alex Teed contributed with four points each. Despite these efforts, the team struggled to overcome BGM’s strong offense.

Colfax-Mingo shot 45.7 percent from the field but faced difficulties from beyond the arc, making only 2-of-11 attempts from three-point range. They were more effective at the free-throw line, converting 5-of-6 attempts. However, with 18 turnovers, the Tigerhawks could not maintain momentum.

BGM’s performance included a more efficient shooting display, connecting on 46.7 percent of their shots and making 5-of-13 from three-point territory. Beau Burns led BGM with 20 points, while Maddox Rhoads added 12 points to help the Bears improve their record to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in SICL play.

As both teams head into the holiday break, they will look to build on their performances in the upcoming matches.
