Senior safety McHale Korf of the Concordia Cobbers has embraced a new chapter in his life as he balances fatherhood with his college football career. On August 12, 2023, Korf and his girlfriend, Ryley Paulson, welcomed their daughter, Willow. This significant life event coincided with the team’s fall football practices, marking a pivotal moment for Korf as he prepares for his fifth season.
Korf is set to start in the Cobbers’ season opener against Mayville State at 19:00 on September 6, 2023, at Jake Christiansen Stadium. This matchup not only represents the beginning of the season for the Cobbers but also the first night game at their home stadium. For Korf, having his daughter in the stands adds a new layer of motivation. “You’re doing this for her and for the memories of her,” he stated, expressing his hopes of sharing video clips of the game with Willow in the future.
At 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds, Korf is also a healthcare leadership major. He has managed to juggle the demands of fatherhood, academics, and football as he prepares for the upcoming game against the Comets, who have switched to a triple-option offense this season. “It’s been crazy,” Korf remarked, reflecting on the joy of starting a family while pursuing his passion for football.
Cobbers head coach Terry Horan praised Korf for his ability to balance these responsibilities. “He’s super, super mature,” Horan noted. “He’s handled it with grace. His life is super organized.” Korf missed most of his sophomore season in 2022 due to a knee injury but has returned this fall with renewed determination to finish his college career strong.
The day after Willow’s birth, Korf attended a team meeting where he received a standing ovation from his teammates. “It’s definitely a type of love feeling that these guys are my brothers,” he said, emphasizing the strong bond within the team. Korf plans for Ryley to bring Willow to the game, allowing for postgame photos to commemorate the occasion.
Korf’s journey has not been without challenges, but he finds fulfillment in balancing his new role as a father with his athletic commitments. “Sometimes nights get exhausting,” he admitted, “but when you’re able to look into her eyes, it gives your life purpose.” He has recorded 76 career tackles in 22 games with the Cobbers, showcasing his skills after transitioning from quarterback and cornerback in high school to safety at Concordia.
Horan acknowledged Korf’s crucial role in the team’s defense, particularly against the triple-option offense. “He’s fundamentally sound, extremely bright, and an incredible leader,” Horan said. Korf appreciates the opportunity to face an offensive system he once ran, adding depth to his understanding of the game.
As the season kicks off, Korf finds comfort in the presence of his newborn daughter amid a busy football schedule. “It takes your mind off some things, too,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of family in maintaining balance in his life. As he prepares for the upcoming game, Korf reflects on the significance of living in the moment, cherishing both his family and the sport he loves.
