The Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars surged up the national college football rankings following a thrilling 24-21 victory over their rival, the Utah Utes, on October 21, 2023. This win marked a significant moment in their rivalry, as it was only the fourth meeting between the two schools while both teams were ranked in the top 25. The outcome not only elevated BYU’s standing but also contributed to a weekend of upsets that reshaped the rankings.
Entering the game, BYU held the No. 15 spot in the Associated Press (AP) poll, while Utah was ranked No. 23. After the matchup, BYU climbed four places to No. 11 in the latest AP rankings, amassing 975 points. In the US LBM Coaches Poll, the Cougars rose to No. 10 with 990 points. This marks BYU’s highest ranking since their previous encounter with Utah last season, where they reached No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings after winning 22-21.
In contrast, Utah’s defeat resulted in the team falling out of both the AP and Coaches polls. Previously ranked No. 23 in the AP and No. 22 in the Coaches rankings, Utah now holds 40 points in the AP poll, making them the second-most among those receiving votes. In the Coaches poll, they received 51 points, ranking third among teams just outside the top 25.
BYU Leads Big 12 Rankings After Week 8
Following their latest performance, BYU has emerged as the highest-ranked team in the Big 12 conference, which saw mixed results over the weekend. Four Big 12 teams are currently represented in the national top 25. The Texas Tech Red Raiders suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Arizona State 26-22, which caused them to drop seven spots to No. 14 in the AP poll and No. 15 in the Coaches poll.
Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bearcats maintained their unbeaten record in conference play with a decisive 49-17 victory over Oklahoma State, moving up three spots to No. 21 in both rankings. Arizona State capitalized on their win against Texas Tech, re-entering the top 25 at No. 24 in the AP poll and No. 25 in the Coaches rankings.
The shifting landscape in college football rankings after Week 8 highlights the competitive nature of the sport and sets the stage for further developments as teams vie for playoff positions. As the season progresses, BYU will look to maintain their momentum and solidify their standing in the national rankings.
