James Hagens, the top prospect for the Boston Bruins, has confirmed his decision to return to Boston College for his sophomore season. In an interview with Scott McLaughlin from WEEI 93.7, Hagens expressed that he is in no rush to advance, emphasizing that player development is a “marathon, not a sprint.” This announcement was made during the Bruins’ 14th annual back-to-school celebration, where he participated alongside current Bruins players Mason Lohrei and John Beecher.

Hagens’ commitment to Boston College is poised to significantly impact the college hockey landscape. Last season, he emerged as one of the top freshmen in the NCAA, recording an impressive 37 points in 37 games. His performance earned him a unanimous selection to Hockey East’s All-Rookie team, a prestigious accolade he shared with teammate Teddy Stiga and Cole Hutson of Boston University. Hagens played a critical role for the Eagles, often positioned between wingers Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard, who previously played alongside top prospect Will Smith.

Despite questions regarding his scoring potential relative to other draft-eligible players, Hagens consistently delivered results on the ice. Known for his ability to anticipate plays and position himself strategically, he showcased both finesse and strength, enabling him to penetrate high-risk areas effectively. Additionally, he demonstrated notable improvement throughout the season, enhancing his physical presence and contribution to team plays, even when not directly involved.

As the 2024-25 season approaches, Hagens is regarded as a leading candidate for the first overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft. His previous achievements include dominating performances with the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP), where he recorded 187 points in 118 games, making him the fifth-highest scorer in NTDP history. Hagens also set records at both the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge and the 2024 World U18 Championship, scoring 21 points in seven games and 22 points in seven games, respectively.

Looking ahead, Boston College will welcome a revamped lineup next season. With both Leonard and Perreault signing NHL entry-level contracts, Hagens will find himself in a new environment. One wing position will likely be filled by Stiga, who has established strong chemistry with Hagens over the years. The other will be contested by transfer forward Ryan Conmy or fellow Bruins draft pick William Moore.

With Hagens and Moore among six Bruins prospects expected to join the Eagles, local fans have much to anticipate when the puck drops at Conte Forum. Hagens’ decision to stay in college not only underscores his commitment to development but also promises an exciting season ahead for Boston College hockey.
