AJ Dybantsa made headlines on December 25, 2023, by delivering a historic triple-double performance as BYU defeated Eastern Washington 109-81 in their final nonconference game of the season. This remarkable achievement marked the first triple-double of Dybantsa’s career and the first for BYU since March 2016, when Kyle Collinsworth accomplished the feat. Dybantsa recorded 33 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, becoming the first player in BYU history to achieve a 30-point triple-double over 124 seasons of basketball.

In a remarkable display of skill, Dybantsa shot an impressive 11 for 13 from the field, making him the first college player this century to achieve a 30-point triple-double with 80% shooting. At just 18 years and 329 days old, he also became the youngest player in NCAA history to reach this milestone. His electrifying performance solidified his reputation as a generational talent.

Game Highlights and Team Performance

Dybantsa’s scoring prowess was evident early on, as he poured in 21 of his 33 points during the first half. The second half saw him focus on facilitating plays, culminating with a key assist to Mihailo Boskovic for a three-pointer that secured his 10th assist and the triple-double. The crowd at the Marriott Center, which neared 18,000, erupted in celebration, showcasing the excitement surrounding his performance.

“He’s really starting to understand how aggressive he can be,”

stated BYU head coach Kevin Young after the game. Young noted Dybantsa’s ability to draw fouls and find his teammates, highlighting his growth in understanding the game’s physicality.

While the Cougars shone offensively, scoring a season-high 109 points and shooting 53.5% from the field, they struggled defensively in the first half. Eastern Washington shot 51.5% from the field and made eight three-pointers, leading to a close five-point deficit at halftime.

Young expressed concern over his team’s defensive effort, stating, “I thought we were as disconnected (defensively) as we’ve been all year.” He attributed the lack of focus to a combination of early holiday excitement and the Eagles’ effective execution, but emphasized the need for improvement as they transition into conference play.

Looking Ahead

In the second half, BYU made adjustments, holding Eastern Washington to just 2 of 12 shooting from beyond the arc. Dybantsa’s teammates also stepped up, with Richie Saunders contributing 22 points and Kennard Davis Jr. also adding 22 points, including five three-pointers. The Cougars’ ability to make quick offensive decisions led to effective ball movement and a high volume of three-point attempts, with 42 shots from beyond the arc, resulting in 16 successful tries.

As the Cougars wrap up their nonconference schedule with a 12-1 record and five victories against Quad 1/2 opponents, they look forward to beginning Big 12 play on January 3 against Kansas State. Young expressed optimism about the team’s readiness, stating, “There’s definitely things we can get better at, but I think we’re at a B+.” With Dybantsa leading the way, BYU fans can expect continued excitement as the season progresses.
