In a significant setback for the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on September 10, 2025, that starting quarterback Brock Purdy could miss “multiple games” due to injuries to his left shoulder and toe. This announcement raises concerns about Purdy’s availability for the upcoming road game against the New Orleans Saints on September 17 at 1 p.m. ET, where he is considered a “long shot” to play. In his absence, Mac Jones, who previously played for the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars, is expected to take the helm.

The news of Purdy’s injury compounds the challenges facing a 49ers offense already struggling with injuries to key players. Just days earlier, the team placed six-time Pro Bowler George Kittle on injured reserve due to a hamstring issue, sidelining him for at least four games. Additionally, star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is not anticipated to return until Week 6, further depleting the offensive arsenal.

Jones, who struggled last season, finishing with a 2-5 record as a starter for the Jaguars, faces a daunting task. In those seven games, he threw the same number of interceptions and touchdown passes, both totaling eight, and posted a below-average 36.6 QBR. Although Shanahan expressed interest in Jones back in August 2022, noting that the 49ers nearly chose him over Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft, his performance thus far raises questions about his readiness to lead the team effectively.

Purdy’s performance last season was a bright spot for the 49ers. He ranked 10th in the NFL in passing yards with 3,864 yards over 15 games and had an impressive 64.8 QBR. His ability to make critical plays, including a game-winning touchdown pass to Jake Tonges in the Week 1 victory against the Seattle Seahawks, showcased his potential. That touchdown had a completion probability of just 14.7%, highlighting Purdy’s knack for high-pressure situations.

As the team prepares for the Saints, the 49ers must rely heavily on their defense, which limited Seattle to just 230 yards in their season opener. With an injury-riddled offense, the defense will play a crucial role in keeping the team competitive. If Purdy’s absence extends beyond a single game, the 49ers’ playoff aspirations could be severely impacted.

The coming weeks will be pivotal for the 49ers as they navigate through these injuries. The performance of Jones will be critical, and fans will be eager to see if he can rise to the occasion in Purdy’s absence.
