SpaceX has successfully completed the final launch of its Starship Version 2, which took place on October 13, 2023. This event marked a significant milestone as the megarocket concluded its nearly two-year run with an impressive 11th suborbital test flight. The mission paves the way for the anticipated Starship Version 3, slated to debut in 2026. This upgraded model will not only be larger but also incorporate more efficient Raptor engines, enhancing its capabilities for future missions.

The forthcoming Version 3 of Starship is designed to carry payloads into orbit and facilitate missions to both the Moon and Mars. It will be approximately 5 feet taller (1.5 meters) than its predecessor, allowing it to transport a greater amount of propellant. Additionally, new docking adapters will enable in-orbit fuel transfers, a crucial development for extended missions beyond low Earth orbit.

In its final flight, Starship Version 2 executed several in-flight demonstrations successfully. Similar to earlier missions, it followed a suborbital trajectory and deployed eight Starlink simulators. While the last two flights showcased the rocket’s potential, they followed a string of earlier failures that highlighted the challenges SpaceX faced throughout the year. Despite these setbacks, the company remains optimistic about the future.

SpaceX released a statement emphasizing its focus on the next generation of Starship and Super Heavy, with multiple vehicles currently under construction and undergoing preparations for testing. The statement outlined that this new iteration will be instrumental for the initial orbital flights, operational payload missions, and propellant transfers.

The enhancements in Version 3 include a more powerful variant of the Raptor engines, known as the third-generation models. SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot noted during the Starship’s final test flight webcast that the upgrades extend beyond the engines, incorporating energy storage improvements and significant avionics changes. These modifications aim to support longer-duration missions, a necessary step for future explorations.

To facilitate operations in space, SpaceX is also developing a ship-to-ship propellant transfer system. Huot highlighted the importance of the new docking adapters for this capability, stating, “That’s a core capability of Starship that we’re going to demonstrate next year.” This system will be vital for refueling the vehicle once it is in orbit.

As with any new prototype, the transition to Version 3 will come with its own challenges. In a September interview, Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, acknowledged that “pretty much everything changes on the rocket with version 3.” He cautioned that the redesigned vehicle might experience initial difficulties due to its extensive modifications.

Musk has expressed a desire to send an uncrewed Starship to Mars during a launch window in 2024. However, it remains uncertain if the upgraded rocket will be prepared for such an ambitious mission by that time. The development of Starship Version 3 represents a significant leap forward for SpaceX, underscoring the company’s commitment to advancing space exploration and its vision for interplanetary travel.
