Richard “Dick” David Waller, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted husband, has passed away at the age of 88. His death comes just five months after the loss of his wife, Marilyn Waller. Waller was known for his remarkable career as both an electrical engineer and a talented jazz musician.
Born on March 28, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Richard faced significant challenges in his early life. He and his younger brother, Ronald, were raised by their grandparents after the death of their mother, Mildred, when Richard was just four years old. The brothers attended St. John Kanty Catholic grade school and later Pulaski High School. Richard developed a passion for mathematics and music during his formative years, which would shape both his personal and professional life.
Richard worked his way through college by performing in jazz nightclubs, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University in 1958. Following his education, he served in the Wisconsin Air National Guard and began his career at Hughes Aircraft Corporation in the Radar Division. This position took him to sunny Los Angeles, California, in 1959, where he played a pivotal role in several significant defense projects, leveraging groundbreaking technologies that remain in use today.
In 1960, Richard met the love of his life, Marilyn Herrmann, in the same apartment complex where he lived. Their romance blossomed, leading to their marriage in 1961. They established their first home in Westchester, California, and embarked on a journey filled with travel across Europe, South America, and Asia. Their family grew with the arrival of their first child, Susan, in 1966, and son Steven, born in 1971.
Richard and Marilyn cherished their family time, often embarking on trips to visit relatives and enjoy activities such as skiing and vacations in Hawaii. They also traveled extensively with friends, creating lasting memories together.
Throughout his life, Richard was passionate about music. He played in various big band jazz and Latin bands in the South Bay area, showcasing his skills on the alto and tenor saxophones, clarinet, and flute. He frequently performed at venues like Alpine Village and enjoyed golfing during his leisure time.
Richard is predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, and his brother Ronald (Diane) Waller. He is survived by his daughter, Susan (Mike) Poland, and son, Steven Waller, along with his grandchildren Shaun, Matthew, and Sara Poland, and Stephanie and Sophia Waller. He also leaves behind great-grandchild Celeste Poland, cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
