On September 12, 2023, Google and the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (RECF) organized a comprehensive Kids Robotics Workshop at Oklahoma Christian University. This free, full-day event attracted 6th to 8th-grade students eager to immerse themselves in robotics and STEM education. Participants engaged in a series of interactive sessions and collaborative competitions designed to foster creativity and critical thinking.

According to Kate Franko, Google’s regional head of data center public affairs, “Interactive experiences like the Kids Robotics Workshops allow students to grow their passion for STEM, expand skillsets, and explore potential career paths.” Franko expressed pride in Google’s partnership with RECF, highlighting the opportunity to inspire future STEM leaders in Oklahoma.

Participants from the Oklahoma City metro area engaged in hands-on activities, constructing projects such as a Claw Bot and competing in robot challenges. The event not only provided meals for the students, but also an environment where they could build, test, and refine their robot designs. This practical experience allowed students to demonstrate their newly acquired skills and problem-solving techniques.

During the workshop, Google representatives took part in speaking sessions, sharing insights about career opportunities in STEM fields. Dan Mantz, CEO of the RECF, remarked on the significance of the workshop, stating, “The Kids Robotics Workshop is a powerful introduction to STEM where moments of curiosity quickly turn into excitement about robotics.” He emphasized that the collaboration with Google broadens access to hands-on experiences for young learners, equipping them with the confidence and skills necessary for future innovation.

Research indicates that early involvement in STEM education significantly increases the likelihood of students pursuing related fields. Notably, 92% of students engaged in robotics are more inclined to take advanced STEM courses in high school or college. Events like this workshop not only promote technical skills but also essential qualities such as persistence, collaboration, and commitment.

Through initiatives like the Kids Robotics Workshop, Google and RECF are laying the groundwork for the next generation of innovators. By fostering an environment that encourages exploration and creativity, they are helping to shape a future where students are better prepared to tackle the challenges of tomorrow’s industries.
