Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, aged 74, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on the morning of December 3, 2025. Her death was attributed to complications related to diabetes. Born in Queens, New York, Cathy was the daughter of Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea and later moved to Hermosa Beach, California, where she became a prominent member of the community.
Cathy graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1969 and married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy in 1978. Together, they built a life centered around both their professional and personal commitments. They worked at Shea Company, a glass business in Hermosa Beach, but were perhaps best known for their extensive volunteer efforts.
Commitment to Community Service
Cathy’s dedication to education and community service was evident in her various roles. She served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and worked for many years at Hermosa Valley School. Cathy’s passion for nurturing young leaders led her to establish the Kiwanis Builders Club at the school, a program aimed at empowering students through service to others. Additionally, she was a strong supporter of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association.
Her public service extended beyond education. Cathy represented Hermosa Beach on the Los Angeles County Beach Commission for nearly a decade, contributing her insights and advocacy for beach preservation and community welfare. Both Cathy and Dick were active members of the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, where they took on various leadership positions, including the presidency. In recognition of her contributions, Cathy was honored as the “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998.
Funeral Arrangements and Legacy
The community has come together to honor Cathy’s life and legacy. Funeral services and inurnment are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the ceremony, a celebration of her life will be held at the Kiwanis Hall at 2515 Valley Drive, allowing friends and family to share memories and reflect on her impactful contributions.
Cathy McCurdy’s commitment to her community, particularly in education and service, has left a lasting impression on Hermosa Beach. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations to engage in meaningful service and leadership.
