Beverly Knudson, a beloved mother and vibrant member of her community, passed away on December 11 after a brief struggle with pneumonia. She was 89 years old and had been recovering from partial hip replacement surgery. Despite facing the challenges of dementia in her later years, Beverly remained a loving and spirited presence in the lives of those around her until her final days.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Beverly was raised by a strong father, a skilled machinist, and a nurturing mother who excelled in homemaking. In 1938, the family relocated to Pomona, California, seeking better opportunities. The onset of World War II prompted a move back to Cleveland in 1940 to be near family, in case her father was drafted. Fortunately, his expertise in manufacturing made him a valuable asset in the war effort, allowing him to contribute locally.
Beverly’s childhood was filled with memories of helping her mother and enjoying outings to the movies with her family. At the age of 11, the family moved to North Hollywood, where she attended Van Nuys High School. It was there that she blossomed into a confident young woman, catching the attention of her classmates, including future actor Robert Redford.
After two years at junior college, Beverly pursued her passion for dental hygiene at the University of Southern California (USC). She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in 1959 and began her career in a dental office near Universal Studios. Her professional journey included serving as President of the San Fernando Valley Dental Hygienists’ Society.
In 1960, Beverly met her future husband, Harlan Knudson, at a Lutheran Church mixer. After their marriage, the couple settled in Rancho Palos Verdes in 1964, where they raised three energetic sons: Mark, Brian, and Eric. Throughout her life, Beverly was actively involved in her community, serving as President of the PTA at Silver Spur Elementary School and as a board member of the Palos Verdes Art Associates.
Her interests extended beyond family and community service; she was an avid tennis and Scrabble player, a dedicated church choir member, and a performer with The Prime Time Players at The Norris Theatre. Beverly also supported numerous local charities, including the Bravo! support group. Known for her love of travel, she and Harlan enjoyed exploring the world together, often accompanied by a glass of wine at social gatherings.
Beverly’s culinary skills were notable as well; she once won an apple pie contest. A sensitive soul, she often found herself moved to tears during church sermons. Even after retiring in 2006, she continued working part-time as a hygienist. In her 70s, she took a writing class, resulting in a semi-autobiographical novel titled “The Linden Tree Legacy,” which reflects her heritage. She also authored an autobiography chronicling her experiences as a dental hygienist, titled “Down In The Mouth,” which is set to be released soon.
Beverly’s vivacious spirit, curiosity, and infectious laughter endeared her to family and friends alike. She is survived by her three sons, daughter-in-law Joelle, and three grandchildren: Makenna, Tyler, and Breegan.
A memorial service and celebratory lunch reception will take place on March 7, 2025, from 11:00 to 14:00 at The Neighborhood Church, located at 415 Paseo Del Mar, Palos Verdes Estates. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Neighborhood Church, where both Beverly and Harlan were active members. A private ceremony will follow at Green Hills Mortuary, where their ashes will be interred together. Beverly’s name will be added to a commemorative plaque honoring Harlan, who passed away in December 2024.
Beverly Knudson’s legacy will be remembered by all who knew her, reflecting a life filled with love, laughter, and community spirit.
