Lake Kinney, a beloved educator and world traveler, died peacefully at her home in Livermore, California, on October 15, 2025, at the age of 92. Born Lake Schoffner on December 1, 1932, in Junction City, Kansas, she dedicated her life to teaching and fostering connections around the globe.

Lake was the daughter of Porter and Florence Schoffner and grew up with two sisters, Betty and Louise, both of whom preceded her in death. She graduated from Kansas State University and subsequently became an educator for the dependents of Armed Services personnel, a role that took her to locations including the Philippines, Germany, and Libya. Her extensive travels across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East enriched her life and the lives of her students.

A Life of Adventure and Connection

After her teaching career abroad, Lake returned to the United States, settling in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she raised her two children, Stefanie Gran and Jon Ellstrom. There, she formed deep friendships and became an integral part of her community. A pivotal moment in her life occurred during a high school reunion in the 1990s, where she reconnected with former classmate Jack Kinney. Their bond quickly grew, leading Lake to move to Hermosa Beach, which she proudly claimed as her hometown.

Lake and Jack shared numerous adventures together and enjoyed a life filled with love until Jack’s passing in 2015. Following his death, she relocated to Northern California to be closer to her family. Even in her later years, Lake continued to make new friends and explore new places.

Legacy and Final Wishes

Lake is survived by her daughter, Stefanie Gran, her son Jon Ellstrom, and her grandson, Andrei Gran, along with son-in-law Steve Gran and son-in-law Edgar Tamayo. In alignment with her wishes, Lake’s ashes will be spread in the San Francisco Bay at the shores of Angel Island, where Jack’s ashes were also laid to rest, symbolizing their eternal connection.

Lake Kinney was known for her big heart and generosity, leaving behind a legacy of kindness. Those who knew her will remember her spirit and the joy she brought to their lives. As her family reflects on her life, they express their hope that her memory will continue to inspire smiles and love among all who were fortunate enough to know her. Lake’s passing marks the end of an era, but her impact on the lives she touched will undoubtedly endure.
