Arlene Beth Antonovich Harrison, a cherished matriarch of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89. Her death marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to family, art, and environmental advocacy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude K. Harrison, who passed away in 2018, and her brother Carl Antonovich, who died in 2024.

Affectionately known as “Nene,” Arlene was a lifelong resident of San Pedro, California. She was a passionate environmental activist and a proud representative of her Croatian fishing family heritage. Her father, Carl Antonovich, and grandfather, John Antonovich, who immigrated to the United States from Korcula in 1907, instilled a deep connection to the ocean in her life.

A Life Enriched by Art and Community

Arlene was a gifted artist with a talent for oil painting, often capturing the coastal scenery around her home. As a member of the San Pedro Art Association, she frequently painted outdoors alongside fellow artists, drawing inspiration from her ocean view beach house. Friends and family fondly remember her as an exceptional chef and hostess, known for her Croatian seafood dishes, especially her famous hobotnica octopus salad.

Her home became a gathering place for family and friends, where laughter and love were abundant. Arlene cherished hosting dinner parties filled with good food and storytelling. She nurtured not only her four sons but also their friends, treating them like her own.

Growing up in a beach-centric environment, Arlene taught her sons to swim at Cabrillo Beach, instilling a love for the ocean that has transcended generations, reaching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family summers spent on Catalina Island created lasting memories and traditions that will continue to be honored.

Legacy and Community Impact

Arlene’s beach house on Bluff Place was the backdrop for numerous family celebrations, including 4th of July fireworks, Christmas Eve seafood feasts, and birthdays. Her legacy is carried on by her sons: Robb Heberer (Debbe), Craig Heberer (Teresa), Karl Heberer (Julie), and Chris Heberer (Maria). She is also survived by granddaughters Heidi Linscomb (Chris), Megan Wescott, Molly Dragich (Matt), and Aubry Heberer, as well as numerous great-grandchildren.

In keeping with her wishes, a private Celebration of Life is being organized for immediate family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, where her sons spent many afternoons, and the San Pedro Art Association, reflecting her commitment to community and the arts.

Arlene’s life was a testament to the power of love, art, and family. Her contributions to her community and the memories she created will continue to resonate throughout San Pedro and beyond.
