Water.org has achieved a significant milestone by providing over 81 million people with access to safe water or sanitation solutions. This accomplishment highlights the effectiveness of the organization’s market-driven approaches to addressing the global water crisis.

Gary White, CEO and co-founder of Water.org, announced that in the past year alone, more than 10 million people gained durable access to safe water or sanitation. “These are families choosing the household solutions that work best for them,” White stated. The progress has been facilitated through 17.8 million small loans from local financial partners, showcasing a model that empowers those living in poverty, particularly women who are most affected by water scarcity.

Currently, approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water, while 3.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities. Water.org’s approach addresses these critical issues through innovative solutions. The organization reports that for every dollar donated, $20 is generated for water and sanitation initiatives, amplifying the impact of each contribution.

The focus on women is particularly noteworthy, as 90% of these affordable loans are directed toward them. “Our work focuses on ensuring that families in need can take control of their futures,” remarked Vedika Bhandarkar, President and COO of Water.org. By partnering with local financial institutions, Water.org enables families to select accessible and sustainable water and sanitation solutions, thus fostering long-term stability.

Impact on Families and Communities

Water.org’s commitment to scaling its efforts has allowed it to reach more than 81 million people, significantly surpassing the impact of other leading water charities. The organization’s financing options help families overcome barriers to essential resources, providing women with more choices, improving children’s health, and creating opportunities for families to escape the cycle of poverty.

According to Matt Damon, co-founder of Water.org, “Access to safe water transforms lives—it improves health, gives kids the time and opportunity to go to school, empowers women with more choice, and helps families break the cycle of poverty.” He emphasized that investing in water infrastructure is critical for enhancing health, education, and gender equity.

To further its mission, Water.org continues to seek support to expand its reach. Individuals interested in contributing to the cause can visit Water.org/donate to assist in providing sustainable water and sanitation solutions to more families in need.
