A veteran is reaching out to reconnect with a family that offered him kindness during a challenging period in his youth. Mikee Richards, who met Delbert Forbes during boot camp at Fort Ord, California, in 1966, recalls the support he received from Delbert’s family while navigating the difficulties of military life.
Richards, originally from Malad, Idaho, was just 18 years old when he faced a major turning point. Having been raised by a difficult father, a World War II veteran who prioritized hard work over education, Richards found himself alone after basic training. With only $60 a month from the Army and limited options, he felt unwelcome at home.
During a brief leave, Richards faced the prospect of spending two weeks without a place to stay. Delbert offered a lifeline, inviting him to stay with his family in Paradise, California. The Forbes family provided him with shelter, meals, and even purchased a return ticket for his journey back to Fort Ord. Richards describes those two weeks as a significant boost in his life, allowing him to experience the warmth of a supportive family during a vulnerable time.
Memories of Kindness and Gratitude
Richards recalls falling in love with Paradise and the hospitality of the Forbes family. He expressed a deep appreciation for their generosity, which left a lasting impact on him. After his reassignment, Richards went on to serve 17 months in Germany before deploying to Vietnam. Despite his efforts to reconnect, he lost contact with Delbert and his family over the years.
Now residing in Kelly Ridge, California, after moving from Magalia following the devastating Camp Fire in 2018, Richards is determined to locate the Forbes family. He is eager to express his gratitude for their kindness and to share how their support helped shape his life.
Richards invites anyone with information about the Forbes family to reach out via email at [email protected]. His hope is to reconnect and honor the memory of the compassion he received during a pivotal moment in his life.
