ukraine-strikes-russian-missile-factory-zelensky-insists-on-resilience

Ukraine executed a significant strike on a key Russian missile manufacturing facility on February 21, 2026. The attack targeted the Votkinsk Machine Building Plant, located approximately 860 miles deep in Russia, marking one of the deepest incursions into Russian territory by Ukrainian forces to date. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed his nation’s position, declaring that Ukraine is “definitely” not losing the ongoing war.

The overnight assault involved domestically produced cruise missiles, with reports indicating that local residents in the vicinity of the factory heard multiple explosions. Videos circulated on social media showed black smoke rising from the plant, which is known for producing ballistic missiles for the Russian military. According to Denys Shtilierman, co-owner of Firepoint, the company behind the high-powered Flamingo missile, this event underscores the capabilities of Ukrainian-made weaponry.

In a recent interview, Zelensky stated from his office in Kyiv that Ukrainian forces had liberated over 100 miles of territory occupied by Russian troops in the southern region of Ukraine. “You can’t say that we’re losing the war,” he asserted, adding, “Honestly, we’re definitely not losing it, definitely.” He emphasized the importance of victory, acknowledging that the struggle ahead remains costly.

Ongoing Conflict and Territorial Losses

As the conflict approaches its four-year anniversary since Russia’s invasion began on February 24, 2022, the situation remains dire. Ukraine currently estimates that Russia controls approximately 20% of its territory, particularly in the eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, which form the mineral-rich Donbas area. Zelensky noted that while peace talks are essential, Ukraine must not compromise on critical territorial issues.

He remarked, “Both the Americans and the Russians say that if you want the war to end tomorrow, get out of Donbas.” This reflects the challenging dynamic of negotiating with an aggressor while attempting to reclaim lost territory.

The Flamingo missile, reportedly capable of reaching targets nearly 1,900 miles away, poses a significant threat to Russian positions. This capability was highlighted during the recent strike, showcasing Ukraine’s evolving military technology.

Prospects for Peace and Negotiation

Despite the ongoing conflict, Zelensky expressed hope for further negotiations before the end of the month. He recognized the need for compromises, stating, “It is already our compromise that we are speaking with the aggressor about compromises.” He emphasized that discussing peace at this juncture is a significant step, given that Russia occupies nearly 20% of Ukrainian territory.

Zelensky criticized Russia’s approach to negotiations, calling it “terrorism” when they demand complete control over regions like Donbas. “What does Russia offer us as a compromise? They said, ‘We are ready not to occupy your other regions,’” he remarked, highlighting the challenges faced in diplomatic efforts.

As the conflict escalates, the humanitarian impact remains severe in Russian-controlled areas, where millions of residents face dire living conditions. The situation underscores the pressing need for a resolution, as both sides navigate the complexities of war and potential peace.
