Former President Donald Trump revoked the Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, effective September 1, 2025. This decision was confirmed by a senior White House official and detailed in a memorandum reviewed by NOTUS. The memo, addressed to Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, states, “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”

While former presidents receive lifetime Secret Service protection, former vice presidents, along with their spouses and children under 16 years old, are entitled to protection for six months post-term. For Harris, this period would have concluded on July 21. However, former President Joe Biden extended her Secret Service detail for an additional year through an undisclosed directive prior to leaving office, according to a source familiar with the decision.

Harris is currently preparing for a multi-state tour to promote her new book, titled “107 Days,” which reflects on her unsuccessful presidential campaign. Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, expressed gratitude towards the Secret Service, stating, “The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”

Concerns Over Safety

Trump’s decision comes amid ongoing concerns regarding Harris’s safety. In August 2024, a Virginia man was arrested for making threats against her life. Additionally, during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, Harris was inside the Democratic National Committee headquarters when authorities discovered a pipe bomb nearby.

The cancellation of Harris’s Secret Service protection aligns with Trump’s previous decisions regarding security for individuals connected to the Biden administration. In March, Trump revoked Secret Service protection for Biden’s adult children, Ashley Biden and Hunter Biden. Earlier this year, he also announced the revocation of security clearances for several Biden-era officials, including Biden and Harris.

The implications of Trump’s action may have significant ramifications as Harris embarks on her promotional tour, highlighting the evolving landscape of security protocols for former vice presidents.
