A youth program in the Spirit Lake area of North Dakota is expanding its reach by welcoming new members. The initiative, known as the Spirit Lake Butterflies, aims to empower girls aged 9-15 through education, cultural activities, and community service. The program recently opened applications for 15 new participants after some previous members aged out.

Jolene Crosswhite, director of both Spirit Lake Victim Assistance and Spirit Lake Employment and Training, expressed her satisfaction with the program’s impact. “It’s been very rewarding to see these young ladies when they come to us and how much they’ve grown and been involved in the community,” she stated. The Butterflies meet monthly and participate in various events that emphasize empowerment and cultural traditions.

Applications for the new members closed on July 15, 2023, culminating in a weekend event to welcome the newcomers. The program has organized activities such as placing painted rocks with positive messages throughout the community, launching a bullying awareness campaign, and engaging in community service by baking treats for local elders.

An essential aspect of the program is bridging generational gaps. In June, the Butterflies hosted a meal with elders, inviting them to share their stories at future meetings. The girls have also engaged in discussions regarding issues such as teen dating violence and the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

Crosswhite envisions a future where the Butterflies create a supportive network for young girls in the community. “My goal is creating a safe space,” she remarked, highlighting her hope that past members will be available as trusted confidants for new participants.

Launched in 2021 with the support of the First Nations Women’s Alliance, the program began with just 12 girls. Initial cultural activities included sweats and grandma moon ceremonies, where the girls learned traditional songs and prayers. These experiences focus on guiding the participants in their journey to becoming young women within their cultural framework.

The program has seen significant growth since its inception, and Crosswhite mentioned plans for a similar initiative aimed at boys. The continued development of the Spirit Lake Butterflies reflects the community’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for youth, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed to thrive.
