kingston-common-council-welcomes-new-members-bids-farewell-to-four

During its final meeting of 2025, the Kingston Common Council officially bid farewell to four long-serving members. The meeting marked a significant transition as the council prepares to welcome new faces when it convenes for the first time on January 6, 2026.

The council will welcome four newcomers: Marissa Marvelli from Ward 3, Benjamin Falk from Ward 4, Teryl Mickens from Ward 5, and Ruth Katz from Ward 8. They will join five returning incumbents, ensuring that the nine-member council remains entirely Democratic.

Among those departing are Reynolds Scott-Childress, who has served as Majority Leader for a decade, and other notable members such as Jeanne Edwards from Ward 4, Bryant Drew Andrews from Ward 7, and Steve Schabot from Ward 8, who completed a total of 12 years in service.

Common Council President Andrea Shaut expressed gratitude to the outgoing members for their dedication and contributions during their tenure. The council will need to appoint a new Majority Leader to fill the vacancy left by Scott-Childress.

As the council prepares for the upcoming term, it will continue to operate under the current election schedule. A recent change in state law that shifts most local elections to even years will not impact Kingston’s election cycle. Common Council members serve a two-year term, and this upcoming session promises to bring fresh perspectives alongside experienced representatives.

The Kingston community looks forward to the contributions of the new members as they work alongside their seasoned counterparts to address local issues and enhance the quality of life in the city.
