The future of trees along Poipu Road will be a focal point at the Kauai County Council meeting scheduled for October 15, 2023. Council Chair Mel Rapozo confirmed that the discussion will begin at 8:30 a.m., allowing community members, particularly local elders, to participate in the proceedings.

Rapozo’s announcement comes in response to growing community concerns regarding the planned removal of approximately 40 trees along Poipu Road. These trees, including the notable Golden Trumpet Tree (scientific name: Tabebuia chryssotricha), have drawn the attention of residents who were surprised to learn about the removal, which was slated to commence on October 1.

The decision to remove the trees is linked to a community development project aimed at enhancing pedestrian access from nearby resorts to the Kukuiula shopping area. This initiative was part of the improvements made during the construction of the Poipu roundabout. Until recently, the matter had not generated significant public attention, but it resurfaced as residents became aware of the impending tree removals.

During a recent community event for Fire Prevention Week, Rapozo engaged with local residents who expressed their discontent regarding the tree removals. On Tuesday afternoon, he met with a group of concerned citizens at the Poipu site, where they voiced their objections and shared their emotional connection to the trees.

In response to the feedback he received, Rapozo took the initiative to contact the contractor responsible for the removals. He successfully advocated for a pause in the process until after the council meeting, demonstrating a willingness to consider community input.

As the council prepares for the discussion, the fate of the Golden Trumpet Trees, which are celebrated for their vibrant yellow blooms in Waimea, remains uncertain. The outcome of the meeting could have significant implications for local residents who cherish these trees and their contributions to the area’s natural beauty.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend the meeting and voice their opinions on this pressing issue, highlighting the importance of public participation in local governance.
