Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) expressed strong support for ending the federal government shutdown, which has now entered its 21st day. Speaking to reporters on October 21, 2025, he indicated a willingness to back Republican efforts to eliminate the Senate filibuster for a specific funding measure. This potential change aims to facilitate the passage of a House-approved budget with a simple majority vote.

Fetterman emphasized the urgency of the situation, particularly concerning the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is facing a funding crisis. He stated, “There are no winners here. It’s not getting better every day. People are going to start to get really hungry, and I’ve been fully, fully committed to fund SNAP and open up the government.” He also highlighted that the U.S. Capitol Police are currently not being paid, further stressing the negative impacts of the shutdown.

The senator dismissed the ongoing political stalemate as “bad political theater.” He asserted the need for immediate action, saying, “Open it up.” When asked about potentially supporting a Republican initiative to “nuke” the filibuster, Fetterman replied, “Carve it out for that, absolutely.” He acknowledged the Democratic platform, stating, “We ran on killing the filibuster and now we love it. Carve it out so we can move on.” His comments reflect a significant shift in strategy, aimed at preventing future government shutdowns.

Fetterman further likened the current situation to the film “Groundhog Day,” describing it as repetitive and embarrassing. He remarked, “It’s ‘Groundhog Day’ and it’s not entertaining. That’s a great movie, but this is s*****.” His candid remarks underline the frustration felt by many lawmakers and constituents alike regarding the ongoing impasse.

As the shutdown continues, the pressure mounts on both parties to reach a resolution that ensures the funding of essential services and programs. Fetterman’s readiness to support changes to longstanding Senate procedures highlights the growing urgency among lawmakers to find a path forward.
