The College of St. Scholastica, a significant educational institution in Duluth, announced its commitment to enhancing local and global communities through various initiatives as it celebrates its 114th anniversary. Under the leadership of President Barbara McDonald, who will retire on July 3, 2025, the college is launching programs aimed at fostering economic growth and addressing pressing educational needs.

In a recent economic-impact study, the college revealed its contributions to the local economy exceed $227 million, both directly and indirectly. This figure underscores the institution’s role as a vital community partner and its commitment to improving the region’s economic health. The college’s contributions span various sectors, significantly impacting local businesses and the overall livelihood of residents.

As part of its long-term vision, St. Scholastica’s Board of Trustees approved the “Strategic Plan 2030: Innovating Today for a Dynamic Tomorrow.” This plan highlights four key areas: institutional sustainability, student success, academic programming, and the continuation of its Catholic Benedictine legacy. Among the exciting developments is the launch of the Center for Professional Training and Lifelong Learning, set to open in January 2025. This center will provide professionals with opportunities to enhance their careers through short courses and certifications in high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence and healthcare.

During the last academic year, St. Scholastica celebrated the graduation of over 1,100 students, many of whom have joined key health partners in the region, including Essentia Health and Aspirus St. Luke’s. To further bolster the healthcare workforce, the college plans to renovate its Science Center by 2027, creating a state-of-the-art advanced practice suite that will enhance training for its physician-assistant and nursing programs.

St. Scholastica prides itself on delivering a comprehensive liberal arts education, fostering a well-rounded academic experience that includes humanities, arts, and sciences. The college actively promotes research initiatives through programs like the Innovation Scholars Program, empowering students to engage in significant undergraduate research.

Reflecting on the future, McDonald emphasized the institution’s motto of “building the future,” which encapsulates its commitment to developing pathways for success for students and the broader community. As the search for the next president begins, McDonald expressed confidence that the groundwork laid during her tenure will ensure a smooth transition.

With a strong focus on innovation and community engagement, the College of St. Scholastica is poised to continue its legacy of shaping professionals and leaders in the region and beyond. As the institution looks forward to 2026 and beyond, its initiatives promise to impact the lives of students and the communities they serve, reinforcing St. Scholastica’s integral role in the Twin Ports area.
