The City of Watervliet held a solemn ceremony on September 11, 2023, to commemorate the lives lost during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The event took place at the Watervliet-Colonie Elks Lodge, bringing together members of the community to honor the memory of those impacted by the attacks.

Opening remarks were delivered by Albany County District Attorney Lee Kindlon, who reflected on the significance of the day. The keynote address was presented by Col. Jason Schultz, Commander of the Watervliet Arsenal, who spoke to the enduring impact of the events on both a national and local level. Closing remarks were provided by Watervliet Mayor Charles Patricelli, who emphasized the importance of unity and remembrance.

The ceremony featured a variety of performances and tributes. Local singer Rafi Topalian performed the National Anthem and “God Bless America,” adding a poignant note to the proceedings. The traditional playing of Taps was conducted by Tom MacDonald, further enhancing the solemn atmosphere.

The event began with an opening prayer by Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, setting a reflective tone for the gathering. Watervliet High School senior Fiona Cheng recited the Pledge of Allegiance, reminding attendees of the values that underpin the nation.

In addition to the speeches and performances, remarks were also made by Exalted Ruler James McGovern and state Senator Jake Ashby. Their addresses underscored the community’s commitment to remembering the tragedy and supporting those affected by it.

The Presenting of the Colors was performed by the Watervliet Police Department, symbolizing respect and honor for the sacrifices made on that fateful day. The ceremony also included the Tolling of the Bells, carried out by both the Watervliet Fire Department and the Watervliet Arsenal Fire Department, marking moments of silence for reflection.

This commemorative event served not only as a tribute to the lives lost but also as a reminder of the resilience and unity that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks. As attendees gathered to remember, the spirit of community and solidarity was palpable, reflecting the ongoing commitment to never forget the lessons learned from that day.
