Walter J. Tryon Sr., a lifelong resident of Albany County, passed away peacefully at home on January 2, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on July 30, 1931, in Albany, he was the son of the late Ernest F. Tryon and Oliva A. Tryon. His commitment to family, service, and community defined his long life, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Walter graduated from Voorheesville Central School District in 1950, marking the beginning of a life filled with dedication and hard work. He served honorably in the United States Army during the mid-1950s, where he was stationed in Greenland as a helicopter mechanic. This experience shaped his strong work ethic and technical skills.

Following his military service, Walter embarked on a successful career as an automotive mechanic. He worked at several notable dealerships, including Don Allen Chevrolet, Marsh Hallman Chevrolet, and DePaula Chevrolet in Albany. Walter’s passion for mechanics extended beyond his profession; he enjoyed restoring antique engines, tractors, and various pieces of equipment. His love for the outdoors was evident in his later work at French’s Hollow Fairways in Guilderland Center, where he found joy in both his responsibilities and the surrounding nature.

Community Involvement and Family Life

Walter was a lifetime member of the Hudson Mohawk Chapter of the Pioneer Gas Engine Association, reflecting his deep appreciation for vintage machinery and community engagement. Summers were a cherished time for Walter, often spent camping, boating, and fishing with his family in the beautiful Adirondacks. These moments created lasting memories that his family will treasure.

He is survived by his son, Walter J. Tryon Jr. (Jamie), and his daughter, Diane LaForte (Thomas). His family also includes his granddaughter, Amanda LaForte, and beloved canine grandchildren, Emma, Shea, and Ghost. Walter was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn B. Rudesheim, who played a significant role in his life and family.

Calling hours are scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals in Colonie, with a service to follow. Walter will be laid to rest in the spring at Hannacroix Rural Cemetery, where he will be remembered for his contributions to his family and community.
