A tribute video honoring former South Shore Little League player Michael Cammarata has received an Emmy Award from the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The video, produced by Little League International, was released on September 11, 2022, commemorating Cammarata’s life and legacy, as well as his courageous actions during the September 11 attacks.

Cammarata, a member of the 1991 South Shore Little League team that advanced to the Little League World Series, lost his life while serving as a firefighter during the attacks. The tribute highlights his posthumous induction into the Hall of Excellence, Little League’s highest honor. Notably, Cammarata played right field, wearing the number 11, a number that has since been retired by Little League in his memory.

In the video, Stephen Keener, President and CEO of Little League Baseball and Softball, reflected on Cammarata’s bravery, stating, “What Michael did, the courage he showed that day, were so reflective of what we would want any Little Leaguer to aspire to be.” He further emphasized the significance of retiring the number 11, ensuring that no player in the World Series would wear it again to honor Cammarata’s heroism.

The tribute also featured an appearance by Jason Marquis, a teammate from the 1991 team who later played in Major League Baseball (MLB). Marquis shared heartfelt memories of Cammarata, describing him as “a great athlete and a great teammate” who had a profound love for the game.

Produced by a team including Hannah Heitsenrether, Dallas Miller, Kevin Fountain, Brian McClintock, and Ryan Osadchy, the video serves as a poignant reminder of how youth sports can inspire children to embrace a life of service, while honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As the Little League community continues to celebrate Cammarata’s legacy, this Emmy-winning tribute underscores the enduring impact of his story, encouraging future generations to reflect on the values of courage, teamwork, and selflessness.
