The late Art Hall will be commemorated as the 2025 Art Hall Service Award will be presented to longtime runner and dedicated volunteer organizer Tommy Hart during the S.I. Running Association Legends/Youth Gala on October 29, 2025. This event will take place at LiGreci’s Staaten in Staten Island, New York, honoring those who have made significant contributions to the local running community.

Art Hall, a distinguished distance runner, is remembered for his impressive achievements, including completing the Boston Marathon in just 2 hours, 22 minutes and securing top five finishes in the early NYC Marathon during the 1970s. His legacy also includes a commitment to the sport and community, evident through his initiatives like founding the North Shore Track Club and establishing an urban kids running program while serving on the board of directors for the New York Road Runners Club.

Celebrating a Community Legend

Tommy Hart’s dedication to the sport of running and his extensive volunteer work have made him a beloved figure on Staten Island. “Tommy Hart is a legend in the Staten Island running community and is a deserved flag-bearer of the 2025 Art Hall Service Award!” stated Hall’s son, Art Hall IV. Hart’s involvement dates back to the 1960s, and he has participated in numerous races both nationally and internationally. His volunteer efforts, particularly those benefiting veterans and children, stand out prominently.

“My favorite thing about Tommy,” said SIRA President Michael De Vito, Jr., “is that he shows up as his whole self for our running community. There is no end to his drive, goodness, and commitment.” Hart’s leadership in maintaining local events, especially the annual Muche-Struck Veterans Day Run, is particularly noteworthy. This race has been a local tradition since 1946, aimed at honoring veterans and encouraging youth participation.

Reflecting on his journey, Hart explained, “In 1999, I picked up the leadership of the race from Judge Mike Brennan, who took it over from race founder Mike Dwyer. I wanted to keep it going to honor our veterans through running and to encourage kids to participate.” He emphasized that every child receives a Veterans Day medal, regardless of their age.

A Personal Touch

Hart has established a tradition of having every race participant shake hands with veterans prior to the start of the race, a practice he has maintained for over 25 years. Former Richmond Rockets president Patricia Mulligan remarked, “Tommy also has every participant shake the hand of every veteran before the race, which he’s been doing for over 25 years.”

Expressing gratitude for the upcoming honor, Hart said, “I am very grateful to be honored with the Art Hall Award, a great runner who also became a great friend to me and many others.” Known for his vibrant personality, Hart has become a familiar figure at gala events, often showcasing unique outfits.

“One never knows what Hart will wear to these gatherings, and I believe we all like to guess and look forward to it,” commented SIRA Board Chairman Jeff Benjamin. Hart himself added, “No doubt I’ll be suited up, but I’m not telling anyone what I’ll be wearing!”
