On January 1, 2026, Sean Ryan officially took office as the new Mayor of Buffalo during a ceremonial inauguration held at Kleinhans Music Hall. This event marked the first time in two decades that Buffalo welcomed a newly elected mayor, following a long tenure of former Mayor Byron Brown, who resigned in October 2024.
In his inaugural address, Ryan emphasized a pivotal moment for the city, stating, “This is a moment of choice for our city. We can accept the way things have been, or we can decide to do better.” He outlined his vision for a government that is proactive, accountable, and committed to the diverse neighborhoods of Buffalo.
Principles of Leadership and Commitment
Ryan’s speech outlined several guiding principles for his administration. He promised to create a government that is responsive and transparent, ensuring that it serves all residents effectively. “Our work will be guided by a few clear principles,” said Ryan. “First, a city government that works. Second, neighborhoods matter. Third, our growth must be shared, and finally, leadership must be rooted in integrity, transparency, honesty, and respect.”
The inauguration ceremony began with a legal swearing-in conducted by The Honorable Anthony Brindisi, U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of New York. Brindisi, who has known Ryan since their time together in the New York State Assembly, reflected on their shared journey in public service. “He may not remember this, but a few years back, we were sharing a beer together, probably one of those late budget nights… He said Mayor of Buffalo,” Brindisi recalled.
A Historic Transition and Future Aspirations
Ryan’s inauguration is significant not only for its historical context but also for the changes it signals for Buffalo’s governance. After serving four terms, Brown left office, leading to a brief period under Christopher Scanlon, the acting mayor. Ryan defeated Scanlon in the 2025 Democratic Primary and then secured an overwhelming victory in the November general election.
The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and State Senator April Baskin, who praised Ryan’s collaborative approach to leadership. Baskin acknowledged Ryan’s track record of integrity while expressing optimism about his potential impact on the city, particularly with his innovative restructuring that includes appointing four deputy mayors.
In the days leading up to the inauguration, celebrations commenced with a black-tie gala at the Hotel Lafayette, followed by a reception after the official ceremony. Ryan concluded his address with a call to action, stating, “Today marks the day of a new chapter in Buffalo’s story. The people of the city expect a government that listens, that delivers and treats every neighborhood with dignity and respect.”
As Ryan settles into his office in City Hall, he expressed a commitment to working collaboratively with the community to build a brighter future for Buffalo, stating, “That is the work ahead of us, not building a better Buffalo alone, but building a better Buffalo together.”
