Robert V. Richardson III, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Midlothian, Virginia, on February 6, 2026, at the age of 81. Known affectionately as Robbie to his close friends and family, he leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family and community.
A Life Rooted in Family and Service
Born in Hampton, Virginia, to Barbara and Vollie Richardson, Robert grew up alongside his brother, Jimmy Richardson. The family spent many summers at their cottage at Grand View Beach, where Robert developed a love for the outdoors. He excelled academically, graduating from Christchurch School with the prestigious Bishop’s Award before furthering his education at the College of William and Mary.
After serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, Robert pursued a degree at Richmond Polytechnic Institute, now known as Virginia Commonwealth University. His commitment to service and education shaped his professional journey.
A Distinguished Career
For over two decades, Robert was a respected custom home builder in the Tidewater area, where he operated his own general contracting business. He took great pride in constructing homes that would become treasured family spaces. Later in his career, Robert transitioned to a role as a program manager at Capital One, where he achieved PMP certification and completed an Advanced Project Management Certification through Stanford University. He eventually retired from Wells Fargo, having made significant contributions to the field and mentoring many project managers along the way.
Robert’s impact extended beyond his professional life; he was a loving husband to his wife, Martha Richardson, with whom he shared a remarkable 53 years of marriage. Together, they raised their children, Mark and Sarah, in Poquoson, Virginia, where they created lasting memories at their family home on Lyons Creek.
Robert is survived by his wife, children, son-in-law Chris Harrison, and daughter-in-law Mara Richardson. He was also a proud grandfather to Baker and Tucker Harrison, and Wilder and Annette Richardson. His brother, along with sisters-in-law Lynn Richardson and Mary Ellen Kestel, also survive him, contributing to a close-knit family that will miss him dearly.
Outside of work and family, Robert enjoyed travel, boating, fishing, and woodworking. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and maintained a sense of humor throughout his life, bringing joy to those around him.
