Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo is undergoing a significant transformation, changing its name to Golisano Children’s Hospital following a historic financial donation of $50 million from the Golisano Foundation. This landmark funding represents the largest single gift to a healthcare organization in Western New York’s history and marks a new chapter for the hospital, which is part of the larger Kaleida Health network.
The announcement was made by Don Boyd, CEO of Kaleida Health, who emphasized the impact of the donation on the hospital’s capabilities. He stated, “It means so much to now be a part of a network of children’s hospitals that have the honor of bearing his name.” The change is particularly notable as Oishei is one of only three freestanding children’s hospitals in New York State and one of 43 across the United States.
Golisano Foundation’s Vision and Collaborative Opportunities
This name change signifies more than just a new title. It also introduces a collaboration among children’s hospitals that share the Golisano name, including existing facilities in Rochester and Syracuse, as well as one in Southwest Florida. Erica Dayton, Executive Director of the Golisano Foundation, highlighted the enhanced access to specialized care that this collaboration will offer. “If one hospital doesn’t have neurosurgery and another does, they can connect,” she explained. “This really helps elevate and strengthen the hospitals and the resources that they have at their fingertips.”
As the hospital aligns with the Golisano network, it will continue to provide high-quality pediatric care to the community. The infusion of resources and support from the Golisano Foundation may facilitate new fundraising initiatives aimed at improving facilities and services for children and families.
Future Implications for Local Community Support
The transition to Golisano Children’s Hospital also brings changes to the support structure of the facility. The Oishei Foundation, previously the primary supporter of the hospital, will shift focus toward community investments rather than direct hospital funding. Christina Orsi, President of the Oishei Foundation, assured attendees during the announcement event that the foundation will remain engaged with the community. While she did not detail specific plans, she indicated that upcoming efforts will concentrate on family and community development initiatives.
In a broader philanthropic plan unveiled in September 2023, B. Thomas Golisano, the founder of the Golisano Foundation, pledged over $350 million in donations to various nonprofits across New York State. This extensive commitment includes significant contributions to hospitals, universities, and animal shelters, further establishing Golisano’s legacy of philanthropy.
With this transition, Golisano Children’s Hospital is poised to enhance its role in pediatric healthcare while continuing to engage with the local community through the Oishei Foundation’s new direction. The collaborative efforts between these organizations may lead to improved healthcare outcomes for children across Western New York.
