The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC) has welcomed Laura Forde as its new executive director, effective July 1, 2023. Known for its impressive replica Viking ship and rich collections, the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, Minnesota, is now poised for a period of growth under Forde’s leadership.

Forde, who previously worked at the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum in Bismarck, brings a wealth of experience in education and cultural engagement. Her passion for history is evident as she navigates the museum’s diverse exhibits, which encompass local cuisine, photography, and artifacts that celebrate the region’s Scandinavian and Native American heritage.

Standing near a display of steamer trunks and musical instruments brought by Norwegian immigrants, Forde shared her excitement for the collection. “You can see all the things Norwegian people brought over, and it’s just so neat,” she remarked, highlighting a cast-iron lefse pan that reminded her of her grandmother.

Forde’s background as a social studies teacher, combined with a master’s degree in educational leadership, informs her vision for HCSCC. She believes in the importance of community involvement in learning, stating, “People need to be engaged and involved in their own learning.” This philosophy aligns with the mission of HCSCC, which serves as a platform for exploring local history.

Innovative Approaches to Community Engagement

In her initial weeks, Forde has focused on understanding the organization and implementing technological improvements to enhance visitor engagement and educational programming. “I’m looking at how we can streamline some things, for example, using technology more effectively,” she explained.

Programs such as “History on Tap” aim to connect with residents throughout Clay County, making history accessible in enjoyable formats. Forde appreciates the staff’s ability to design international quality exhibitions despite being a small team. “This little staff of five or six people are designing international museum-quality exhibitions,” she noted.

Forde’s approach emphasizes not only the presentation of history but also the cultural narratives that shape the community. “It’s history, but it’s also culture,” she stated, recognizing the society’s role in celebrating cultural differences and preserving local heritage.

As the fall schedule approaches, Forde plans to streamline administrative processes while continuing to foster a welcoming environment for local residents. She is also exploring alternative fundraising avenues beyond traditional grants to further support the museum’s initiatives. “The first year will focus on small things, but I’ve also been thinking of other ways to fundraise,” she said, expressing her commitment to expanding HCSCC’s services.

A Rich Tapestry of Exhibits

Among the diverse offerings at the Hjemkomst Center is the “Land to Table” exhibition, which highlights the significance of food in Clay County’s cultural identity. The exhibition features a Scandinavian collection of lefse-making equipment, church cookbooks, and videos detailing the region’s culinary traditions. As the museum staff notes, “food plays an important role in all of our lives and plays a key role in our identities.”

In addition, HCSCC prepares for its annual culinary event, PANGEA: Cultivate Our Cultures 2025, scheduled for November 15, 2025. This popular community gathering showcases local chefs, artists, and musicians, drawing thousands to the museum for a vibrant international bazaar.

Regular admission rates for the Hjemkomst Center are as follows: Adults aged 18-64 pay $12, seniors aged 65 and older pay $11, youth aged 5-17 pay $8, and children under 5 enter free.

Forde’s enthusiasm for her new role is palpable. “The boat is impressive and there’s no denying that,” she said, gesturing broadly. “But it’s just the beginning of what we have to offer.” As she takes on the challenges and opportunities at HCSCC, Forde is committed to bringing history to life for the community, ensuring its stories and heritage remain vibrant and accessible.
