Mary Ann Phibbs, a cherished member of the Albany community, passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 89 in the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Born on June 27, 1936, in Schenectady, New York, she was the daughter of the late John Xavier and Agnes Smith Phibbs.

Phibbs is survived by her wife of 45 years, Marilyn MacBride, as well as her beloved nieces, Kathleen Phibbs Brown of Scotia, New York, and Elizabeth Phibbs Roff (Edward) of Stony Point, New York. A graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, she went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from The College of Saint Rose while working full-time.

A Distinguished Career and Passion for Golf

Mary Ann dedicated over 40 years to the Department of Motor Vehicles, where she began her career in the steno pool and eventually became the Manager of Personnel. Her remarkable journey exemplified her hard work and commitment.

An avid golfer, Phibbs made history as the first woman to achieve a hole-in-one at the Stadium Golf Course. She also won the title of club champion twice at the Stadium Country Club and participated in various Member Guest Tournaments at other golf clubs, showcasing her skill and dedication to the sport.

Contributions to Community and Environment

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Phibbs was deeply involved in community service. She served as an Albany County Master Gardener Volunteer for 20 years, attaining Emeritus Status for her contributions. Phibbs answered gardening questions from the public, aided in maintaining gardens, and participated in Garden Education Day for many years, sharing her passion and knowledge with others.

Her commitment to helping those in need extended beyond gardening. Phibbs volunteered as the vice president of Our Brothers Keepers, an organization focused on fundraising for initiatives supporting individuals affected by AIDS. Her philanthropic spirit left a lasting impact on many lives.

Friends and relatives are invited to pay their respects to Phibbs’ family on November 24, 2025, from 15:00 to 18:00 at McVeigh Funeral Home, located at 208 North Allen Street, Albany, New York. Attendees are requested to enter through the rear parking lot entrance.

The funeral service will take place on November 25, 2025, at 10:30 hours at The Parish of Mater Christi, situated at 40 Hopewell Street (Rev. Kenneth J. Doyle Way), Albany, New York. Following the service, the Rite of Committal will be held at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, New York.
