maricopa-county-animal-shelter-seeks-homes-for-600-dogs

As the Christmas season approaches, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) is appealing to residents to consider adopting one of the nearly 600 dogs currently awaiting homes in its shelters. This significant number highlights the ongoing challenge of pet overpopulation, particularly during the holiday season.

MCACC’s communications supervisor, Kim Powell, reported, “We have about 600 dogs right now between our three shelter locations.” The shelters are experiencing an ongoing influx of lost pets, with approximately 50 to 60 animals being found each day. While the festive season brings joy, Powell emphasized that the shelter environment cannot replicate the comfort and companionship of a permanent home.

In her comments to FOX 10 Phoenix, Powell urged potential adopters to think carefully about their decision. “Just make sure that you’re not only getting it just because it’s for holidays,” she stated, stressing that adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment that should be considered by everyone in the household.

Earlier this year, MCACC organized a free adoption event on August 23, 2023, which helped alleviate some of the shelter’s capacity issues. By waiving adoption fees, the event resulted in 197 dogs and puppies finding new homes, showcasing the community’s willingness to adopt. Powell expressed gratitude for the turnout, saying, “We had an incredible turnout and are very grateful for the community choosing to adopt,” as reported by AZFamily.

In an effort to further support the community, MCACC has established a new nonprofit organization, Friends of Animal Care and Control. This initiative aims to provide additional resources for community programs not covered by the shelter’s main budget. Planned services include spay and neuter programs, microchipping, and vaccination events. Powell emphasized the organization’s mission, stating, “We want this place empty,” as they aim to reserve shelter space for dogs that are truly in need.

For those interested in adopting a dog and spreading holiday cheer, MCACC has provided resources for potential adopters to learn more about the process. Detailed information about available animals and the adoption procedure can be accessed through their online platforms.

As the shelter works to find homes for these dogs, the hope is that many will find their forever families this holiday season.
