The Lorain Public Library System’s Avon Branch Library is enhancing its community engagement through a weekly Fiber Arts Group, which provides a space for crafting enthusiasts to collaborate and learn. Meeting every Thursday from noon to 15:00, the program invites individuals to explore various projects, fostering both creativity and social interaction among participants.

Led by librarian Rachel Kowalski and outreach librarian Melanie Potraz, the session on August 28, 2023 focused on the fundamentals of knitting. This initiative aligns with the library’s mission to incorporate more tutorial-based segments into the program, allowing patrons to develop a diverse range of skills. “It’s not just an instructional class, but it encompasses a little bit of everything,” Kowalski stated.

The Fiber Arts Group has seen consistent engagement from community members over the years. Participants work on a variety of projects, including knitting, crocheting, needleworking, and quilting, all while building connections and exploring new hobbies. The Avon Branch Library has prepared informational materials on crafting techniques, which enhance the experience for attendees.

Kowalski emphasized the appeal of the library’s environment, noting, “People like the room because it’s a quiet, nice space, big work area, and good lighting.” The blend of hands-on tutorials and the camaraderie of learning alongside others makes the program unique.

Looking ahead, the Avon Branch Library’s assistant manager, Kim Edsell, shared plans to broaden the scope of the Fiber Arts Group to include a wider array of crafting projects. Starting this fall, the program will welcome individuals to work on any “UFO,” or unfinished object, encouraging creativity beyond traditional fiber arts. “Our Fiber Arts Group is really meant for socialization, for people just to come in and work on their items with other people,” Edsell explained. “They can learn from each other.”

The introduction of more instructional elements has received positive feedback from participants. Kowalski noted that patrons have appreciated the tutorials and the opportunity for hands-on learning, stating, “People were really appreciative that we offered it. They enjoyed the instruction, and they enjoyed the environment that we had in learning that.”

The program aims not only to teach crafting skills but also to foster a sense of community and excitement around new hobbies. “It’s super fun. It’s neat to get people into a new hobby and get people excited about meeting other people in the community,” Kowalski added.
