
Russell D. Pettijohn, a prominent resident of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on September 26, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on December 1, 1928, in Grant City, Missouri, he lived a life marked by dedication to his family, community, and service to his country.
Survived by his two sons, Jeff Pettijohn and Brad Pettijohn, along with their spouses Robin and Greta, Russell leaves behind a legacy that includes seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His family ties extended to siblings, Joan Elford and Donald Pettijohn, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Glee, and other family members, including his parents and brother, Wesley Pettijohn.
Russell was raised in St. Joseph and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1946. Following his education, he proudly served in the Missouri Air National Guard and the U.S. Air Force, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. His professional career included a significant 30-year tenure at the St. Joseph News-Press, where he worked as a printer and in various other roles. He later spent 7.5 years with the St. Joseph School District Maintenance Department.
Community Engagement and Personal Interests
Russell and Glee were charter members of the Savannah Sashayers Square Dance Club, where they enjoyed dancing together for over 40 years. Their commitment to community extended to St. Peter Lutheran Church in St. Joseph, where Russell remained an active member for many years.
In addition to his community involvement, Russell had a passion for outdoor activities. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening, often spending time tending to his yard. For many years, he and Glee took to warmer climates as snowbirds, frequently traveling to Texas, Arizona, and Florida during the colder months.
Family was central to Russell’s life, and he cherished the moments spent with his grandchildren, ensuring that family bonds remained strong throughout his life.
Farewell services will take place at 10:00 on October 4, 2025, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with interment scheduled at Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather from 17:00 to 19:00 on October 3, 2025, at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. The family has requested memorial contributions be made to Missouri Right to Life or Mosaic Life Care Hospice.
