Ron Pagel has made a significant impact on Dover-Eyota Public Schools over the past three decades, serving as a school board member and guiding the district’s direction. Recently, he was recognized by the Minnesota School Boards Association for his remarkable tenure, being one of only three individuals honored among over 300 school districts in the state.

From Student to Board Member

Pagel’s connection to the community extends beyond his role on the school board. A graduate of Dover-Eyota High School in 1979, his formative years in the district inspired him to contribute to the educational system. “I felt good about what they did and provided for me, and I wanted to see that continue for others as I moved forward,” Pagel shared.

Initially, he ran for the school board multiple times before being elected at the age of 35, coinciding with his children’s entry into the school system. Since then, he has held the position continuously, marking nearly half of his life dedicated to the community’s educational development.

Navigating Change and Challenges

Throughout his tenure, Pagel has witnessed transformative changes in education. From the rise of the internet in the mid-1990s to the integration of technology in classrooms, he has played a pivotal role in adapting the district to meet modern educational demands. Traditional chalkboards have been replaced by smartboards, and paper notebooks have evolved into Chromebooks.

Pagel’s leadership has been especially crucial during challenging times, including the recent pandemic and various building projects. His wife, a former teacher with over 25 years of experience in Kasson-Mantorville, provided him with valuable insights about classroom realities, enriching their discussions about school governance.

Despite his commitment, Pagel faced moments of hesitation regarding his continued candidacy. In 2018, he planned not to run again, but due to a lack of candidates, he chose to serve another term. Similarly, in the 2022 elections, the district was undergoing substantial changes, prompting him to remain involved. “I couldn’t walk away. I couldn’t leave that on someone else’s plate,” he explained.

As his current term approaches its conclusion, Pagel is contemplating whether to seek another term. He acknowledges that many challenges lie ahead for school districts, including declining birth rates that necessitate strategic adjustments and financial constraints that many institutions are grappling with.

“I have to see what the circumstances are,” he stated regarding the possibility of continuing his service. “The challenges have not gotten any less.” Pagel’s dedication over three decades exemplifies a commitment to fostering a strong educational environment for future generations.
