A baker in Livonia, Michigan, is making a significant impact this holiday season by establishing a free food pantry to assist families facing challenges due to recent changes in SNAP benefits. Hassan Makki, the owner of Sweet 220 Bakery, has opened his pantry inside the bakery, providing essential food items to those in need in the Metro Detroit area.

Makki, who runs the bakery with his wife, Dalia Makki, believes in the importance of community support. “One of the most beautiful things about our culture is the hospitality and giving back, and I hold that with a huge sense of pride,” he stated. Raised in a family that emphasized generosity, he feels a deep connection to helping others, especially during difficult times.

The pantry is stocked with a variety of items, including rice, beans, pasta, peanut butter, oats, canned goods, canned fruits, vegetables, fresh fruit, and bread, all purchased at Makki’s own expense. His mother assists him by gathering food donations, while customers also contribute supplies to the initiative. “Everything over here is free,” Makki explained to visitors exploring the pantry.

Local residents have praised the pantry’s offerings. Teresa Morris noted the importance of such resources, especially in light of the recent SNAP benefit changes. “This is just a great opportunity for people to come in and grab things that they may need,” she said. Another visitor, Jason Glaze, emphasized the uniqueness of this effort, stating, “A lot of local places wouldn’t even think about this.”

In addition to the pantry, Makki has a history of community service. Earlier in 2023, he provided treats to utility workers and first responders during power outages in the area. This holiday season, he is taking his commitment to helping others even further by adopting three families to provide them with holiday desserts. Makki is focusing on single mothers, families with sick children, and those facing significant challenges.

The stories of nominated families have deeply moved Makki. One nomination described a single mother who had taken guardianship of her niece after her brother’s struggles with addiction led to his passing. The mother expressed her grief and the difficulties of providing a joyful holiday for her children amidst such hardship, highlighting the importance of small gestures like sweet treats to uplift spirits.

Makki reflected on the emotional impact of these stories. “I’ve been through family hardship and loss, and it’s hard to read them, man. Especially when you go home, you know, the heat is on, the fridge is full of food,” he shared, emphasizing the need for compassion and support in the community.

The food pantry operates year-round, and Makki hopes to expand its offerings with continued community support. Families can be nominated for holiday treats through Sweet 220 Bakery’s Instagram account, @sweet220. By fostering a spirit of giving, Makki aims to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing difficulties during the holiday season and beyond.
