A community initiative in Lehi, Utah, aimed at spreading holiday cheer, resulted in significant traffic delays as hundreds of families flocked to receive free toys on December 6, 2023. The event, organized by a local charity, intended to distribute thousands of toys to families in need, showcasing the spirit of giving during the festive season.
Jimmy Rex, the founder and CEO of the organizing group, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “It seems like a small thing, getting toys, but it’s actually a huge thing to wake up on Christmas morning and have something there as a kid,” he stated. Rex has been involved in this effort for several years, inspired by friends who participate in similar toy drives across the country. This year’s event is part of a larger campaign known as the world’s largest toy drive, which aims to distribute nearly 200,000 toys across 15 cities.
Families began lining up early, with many arriving as early as 08:30 a.m. to secure their place in line. Rex noted that the event started ahead of schedule due to the overwhelming turnout. “We were supposed to start at noon, but when I got here, there were already 40 people lined up at 8 a.m., so I started at 8:30 a.m. to clear out our parking lot,” he explained.
The demand for toys reflects a growing need within the community. Dzelle Notoa, a single mother attending the event, shared her challenges. “Holidays: expensive. Rent, bills: expensive. I’m on government assistance, and it’s hard making it happen,” she said. Notoa expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting how such initiatives significantly impact families struggling financially.
With a total of 15,000 toys available this year, the organizers have established a partnership with toy manufacturers, allowing them to purchase toys at cost. This strategy enables the charity to maximize its resources and reach more families. Rex highlighted the high demand for toys, stating, “There were a couple of years where we ended up taking truckloads of toys to hospitals or to schools, but this year we’re seeing a massive need.”
The event not only served as a source of joy for families but also showcased the community’s willingness to come together during the holiday season. Participants expressed their appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a blessing during difficult economic times.
As the toy distribution wrapped up, the organizers reflected on the success of the event and the continued need for such charitable efforts in the Lehi area. The outpouring of support and enthusiasm demonstrated the community’s commitment to ensuring that every child experiences the joy of receiving gifts during the holidays.
