Kalihi Beer has rebranded as Olohana Brewpub, moving from its original location to Chinatown while honoring its roots in Kalihi. This transition reflects the community pride and dedication Chris Cook, the founder, feels towards both neighborhoods. The new venue aims to create a gathering space that embodies the spirit of collaboration and support within the community.
Cook has long viewed his brewery as a reflection of the neighborhood. He recalls discussions with Kalihi residents about what the area needed, with a recurring theme being pride. “The people who grew up here and come out of here are proud of what they accomplished with their life,” Cook noted. His vision is to celebrate the hard work and resilience of local business owners, and this perspective guided the decision to embrace the name Olohana, which means “all hands” in Hawaiian.
The Olohana Brewpub, now situated in Chinatown, features a diverse selection of local brews. Alongside customer favorites such as the Rappa Red IPA and Everybody’s Devil tripel, the brewpub supports other local breweries including Howzit Brewing and Hana Koa Brewing Co. The venue also offers a full cocktail menu, featuring drinks ranging from classic old fashioneds to refreshing Aperol spritzes.
In addition to its drinks, the eatery showcases a menu designed by Chef Nickie Tavares. Diners can choose from a variety of pizzas, including the Saucy Sausage Swagger for $26 and the Fun-Gi Bonanza, also priced at $26. The latter features a rich caramelized onion béchamel topped with an array of mushrooms and fresh thyme.
Snack options are plentiful, including a chef’s selection charcuterie for $17, a hummus platter for $12, and pretzels served with Olohana beer cheese for $14. Those seeking lighter fare can opt for a Mediterranean salad priced at $18 or a summer salad for $19.
Olohana Brewpub also caters to sports fans with its Olohana Football Brunch on Sundays. The brunch includes dishes such as spinach and feta quiche for $16, sausage and pepper frittata for $14, and bagel lox for $14. Additionally, Taco Invader, a popular Tijuana-style taco vendor, will pop up at the brewery on select days, providing a delicious option for taco enthusiasts.
Cook’s vision for Olohana Brewpub is to foster a welcoming atmosphere where individuals from all backgrounds can connect. “Our mission statement for a long time has been to improve the vitality of our communities, and this plays into that as well,” he explained.
Visitors can expect not only a refreshing drink but also a taste of the community spirit woven into every aspect of the brewpub. Whether enjoying a pizza or sipping a cocktail, patrons are invited to experience the pride of both Kalihi and Chinatown in every interaction.
